NO MATTER WHAT YOUR NEAREST TRAINER IS TELLING YOU PULLING ON ROPES, PUSHING SLEDS, JUMPING ON BOXES, AND DOING 100’S OF DIFFERENT AGILITY DRILLS IS NOT GOING TO MAKE YOU FASTER OR STRONGER AT YOUR SPORT!

Sports Specific Training

What is sport specific conditioning?

Everyone intuitively knows “You can’t become a better hitter by bowling!” So when you drop by the nearest sports conditioning specialist why does he feed you a bunch of “bull” about how tire flips are wonderful for your sport specific power?

LET ME BE THE FIRST TRAINER TO STOP SELLING YOU!!!

If you’re not taking hitting lessons, playing baseball, and working on the fundamentals with a “real baseball coach” you can do as many exercises as you want and you won’t be working in a sport specific way!!!

A few facts about sport specific training:

  • Sprinters never run up a hill more than 5 degrees of elevation. Why? It changes there running form compromising their performance!
  • Boxers never punch with more than the weight of a roll of quarters in each hand. Why? It changes their punching form putting them at risk for more hand injuries and reduced power during their punch.
  • Olympic and power lifters never take the stairs and avoid cardio at all costs. Why? They don’t want a single fast twitch muscle fiber to change into a slow twitch muscle fiber reducing their power and force production abilities.
  • One of the best ways to increase speed times in a 40 yard dash is to run faster 10 yard dashes, and avoid running farther than that. Why? 40 Yards is about all a person can sprint without beginning to slow down and pace themselves. Thus the closer you get to 40 yards the more your body begins to pace thus making you practice pacing rather than running at top speed.
  • Squatter’s never do barbell lunges. Why? We don’t want them to get under a bar at the world power lifting competition with 1,000lbs on the bar and have motor confusion between a lunge and a squat.

There are literally a plethora of things that the greatest and strongest athletes avoid doing in order to perform at their best!

SPORT SPECIFIC TRAINING IS MORE ABOUT WHAT YOU SHOULDN’T DO IN THE GYM IN ORDER TO AVOID PERFORMANCE ZAPPING MOVEMENTS!!!

Does this mean you shouldn’t be trying to condition yourself with a qualified instructor? Absolutely not, but what you should be leery of is doing every exercise on the block.

What you need is an expert who can systematically assess what you should be doing and what you shouldn’t! A system that starts with an assessment of current abilities and finds out exactly what exercise/technique/drill will increase your performance. I mean imagine if your computer wasn’t working and the troubleshooting guide just gave you a bunch of work to do without ever knowing what the problem was. When dealing with complex machinery you must assess it in order to create the proper programs that will create a performance increase. Your body is complex so this where the functional movement screen is needed.

The functional movement screen enables me to find out exactly what movement skills you are limited in, and exactly what needs to be addresses to have a proper foundation of movement quality for performance based techniques to work. If you have a lack of calf mobility and can’t squat it doesn’t matter how much you work on “squashing the bug” you’ll still float forward on your front side zapping your performance ability to stay back.

YOU MUST TAKE THE SCREEN AND START WORKING ON YOUR WEAKNESSES!!!

After you prove that you have the fundamental movement quality to perform you can start adding performance skills: strength, more mobility (if needed), and then power. Conditioning is a side effect of working power with limited breaks. Doing pushups till your tongue is hanging on the floor or running miles until your lungs burn won’t do anything for you if your form is wrong! It’s easy to make someone tired… It’s hard to make someone better!

You don’t want to be the pitcher that has done so many lunges that when you step down the mound to throw to home plate that you don’t drive off with the back leg.

You don’t want to be the hitter who’s done so many barbell squats that you can’t relax your back enough to explode your hips through the ball.

You don’t want to be a base stealer that’s done so many lateral agility drills that running forward isn’t getting better.

Why would it matter if you were in great shape but not able to get the job done in your sport?

DON'T CONDITION TO TRAIN!
